The volume is a significant contribution to the study of Nordic and Germanic medieval and early modern magic and witchcraft. By using different approaches and methods of research and drawing materials from various periods (sagas, Eddas, skaldic poetry, homilies charms), it reconstructs pagan beliefs and their transformation and survival in the christianized Northwestern Europe. Moreover the book explores later texts such as “magic books”, judicial records, sermons, etc., offering a survey of the cultural and historical developments of magic, its values and its performers in space and time.
